When my husband left, it felt like my world shattered. The pain was deep, the questions endless. Yet, looking back, that moment became the best thing that ever happened to me. It forced me to confront years of suppression—emotionally, mentally, physically, and even spiritually. It pushed me to rebuild my identity from the ground up. This journey was not easy, but it revealed a strength I never knew I had.
In this post, I want to share how losing what I thought defined me actually set me free. I’ll explore the benefits of reclaiming your self-worth, how to build resilience, and the role faith played in healing my heart. Along the way, I’ll share practical insights from my experience as a certified coach, ISSA master trainer, plyometric and dance instructor, and parent coach. If you feel trapped or lost, this story might help you find your own path to freedom.

Breaking Free from Suppression

Many people stay in relationships where their true selves get buried under expectations, fear, or control. I was no different. Over time, I lost sight of who I was outside of being a wife. My emotions were stifled, my opinions dismissed, and my physical and mental health took a backseat.
When my husband left, I realized I had been living in survival mode, not thriving. The first step was acknowledging the suppression:
Emotional suppression: I had stopped expressing my feelings honestly.
Mental suppression: I doubted my own thoughts and decisions.
Physical suppression: I neglected my body’s needs and health.
Identity suppression: I forgot my passions, dreams, and values.
Recognizing these layers helped me understand why I felt so lost. It was a wake-up call to reclaim my voice and power.
How Losing Myself Became a Path to Strength

Rebuilding after loss is a process of rediscovery. Here are some ways I found strength through this journey:
1. Reconnecting with My Body
As a plyometric and dance instructor, movement has always been a form of expression for me. After the separation, I returned to dance and exercise not just for fitness but to reconnect with my body’s wisdom. This helped me:
Release stored tension and stress
Feel grounded and present
Celebrate my physical capabilities
Physical activity became a daily reminder that my body is mine to nurture and respect.
2. Rebuilding Mental Clarity and Confidence
I used coaching techniques from my ISSA master trainer certification to set small, achievable goals. This approach helped me:
Break overwhelming challenges into manageable steps
Celebrate progress without perfectionism
Build confidence in decision-making
Journaling and mindfulness practices also supported mental clarity, helping me separate my thoughts from old limiting beliefs.
3. Rediscovering My Identity
I explored interests I had put aside, such as dance, coaching, and parenting education. This exploration was crucial to:
Reclaim passions that define me beyond relationships
Build a sense of purpose and direction

Parent coaching certification gave me tools to nurture my role as a mother with confidence and compassion.
The Role of Faith in Healing and Strength
Faith became a cornerstone in my healing process. The Bible offers many verses that speak to the heart’s restoration and inner strength. Here are a few that guided me:
Proverbs 4:23: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
This reminded me to protect my emotional well-being and be mindful of what I allow into my heart.
Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”
This verse gave me hope and courage to keep moving forward.
Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”
Knowing I was not alone helped me face difficult days with resilience.
Faith helped me rebuild my heart and find peace amid uncertainty.
Practical Steps to Embrace Your Own Strength
If you feel trapped or suppressed, here are some practical steps to start your own journey of rediscovery:
Acknowledge your feelings without judgment. Write them down or talk to someone you trust.
Move your body in ways that feel good. Dance, walk, stretch, or try a new fitness class.
Set small goals to regain control over your life. Celebrate every win.
Explore your passions and interests, even if they seem unrelated to your current life.
Seek support from coaches, counselors, or faith communities.
Use scripture or affirmations that resonate with your heart to build inner strength.
Remember, healing is not linear. Be patient and kind to yourself.
Embracing Freedom and New Beginnings
My husband leaving was painful, but it was also a powerful catalyst for growth. I learned that losing someone does not mean losing yourself. Instead, it can be the moment you find your true self and embrace your strength.
This journey taught me to guard my heart, nurture my body and mind, and trust in a higher power for guidance. It also showed me the importance of community, coaching, and faith in rebuilding a life filled with purpose and joy.
If you are facing a similar challenge, know that freedom and rediscovery are possible. Your story is not over—it is just beginning.
